Speciation by HPLC-ICP-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) is an advanced analytical technique that combines the separation capabilities of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or ion chromatography (IC) with the sensitive detection power of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This method is widely used for the analysis of different chemical species (e.g., ions, molecules, complexes) of elements in a sample.
In LC-ICP-MS, the sample undergoes liquid chromatography to separate different species of an element (for example, different oxidation states or chemical forms), and then the separated species are introduced into the ICP-MS for detection and quantification. This method is highly effective for speciation studies, where the goal is to identify and measure the different forms of a particular element in a complex matrix.
